SWIFT news: Seals, Summer Camp Adventures, SLARC ‘Round the Island’ Challenge and ‘Monster the Loch’, Scotland.

Our new SWIFT Offshore Coastal boat has come into it’s own this summer, extending the offering at LARC.

The Recreational Rowers were recently blessed with a seal encounter in Pylewell. Aptly named ‘Swifty’, the ‘Harbour Seal’ stayed and played for about 30 minutes, treating us to a race back up river, enjoying the stern wash off the transom…

Crew feeling very lucky!

Adventures have been travelling further from the pontoon with trips to Oxey and Tanners Beach (with the Learn to Row crews), Newtown Creek, Keyhaven, Hurst, The Hut @Colwell Bay and more recently a JLARC Summer Camp adventure to the Purbecks; Lymington- Durley Chine- Brownsea Island-Knoll Beach-Swanage Bay- Boscombe Beach- Southbourne Beach- Avon Beach- Lymington.

The longest and most challenging event yet, will be SLARC’s Round the Island row. Nine of LARC’s younger members are targeting a 58 mile row from Lymington around the Isle of Wight.

In a test of teamwork, they’ll be rowing for over nine hours to challenge themselves and raise funds for the club, with all sponsorship going towards The 1881 Fund; funding the purchase and maintenance of club boats, equipment and facilities.

Please do take a moment to read more about the event and the team on their GoFundMe

Finally, on September 21, our boat will be trailered up by SWIFT Boats to Inverness for our Master’s Women (Kirsty, Caroline, Suzy and Julia and Junior Cox, J) to race 21 miles across Loch Ness. The crew have been training through the summer in preparation for this distance. Monster the Loch is a signature SWIFT event which we hope to make an annual fixture on the club’s adventuring calendar.

In 2023, 100 crews and 420 competitors from all over the World, in boats of all shapes and sizes line up side by side on the start line ready to taken on Nessie! The crews ranged from self built rowing boats, 18 man Dragon Boats to international rowers and kayakers.
