Champion Behaviours
Wonderful things happen daily in any wide community and in our rowing club, which caters for rowers from aged 11-78, we try to tell this story as often as we can.
The core value of our club, is to support all rowers to achieve their goals, whatever they may be; community, wellness or to be competitive with themselves or against others, locally, regionally, nationally and Internationally.
Success in all it’s forms comes from dedication and hard work with an enthusiastic support network.
We are particularly proud to announce some notable achievements in our J16 and J18 section with Lena Mills, Callan Wallis and George Roche who are all about to embark on new rowing journeys and we wish them every success in achieving their dreams.
Lena Mills
When Lena became National Junior Indoor Champion (NJIRC)@J17, her score went national and it led her to join the British Rowing World Class Start Programme.
She had to commit to training in Reading four times a week (whilst doing A levels) and this culminated in her winning a silver medal in the Single Sculls at the Henley Women’s Regatta, 2021.
American Universities monitor GB junior athletes progress and soon she was contacted via Instagram with offers to study and row in the USA.
Lena was offered a funded athlete scholarship at Duke University; one of the top universities in the USA with a strong medical program and will study a four year course in Neurology, whilst rowing up to 20 hours a week.
Callan Wallis
With success at NJIRC@J14/J15/J16, Callan was also noticed by the British Rowing World Class Start Programme in Reading and was invited to complete some routine talent programme testing: strength & fitness, height and wingspan and standing at 6’6”, he has been invited to join for 2022. Callan is super excited about training in Reading each weekend but will continue to train at LARC through the school week until he finishes his GCSE exams.
He has also been offered rowing scholarship at various prominent rowing schools, so he has some decisions to make.
George Roche
George has been offered an Assyrian Sports Award at Canford School, Wimborne, Dorset.
He had to visit for general academic tests and interview. Then specifically for the Rowing award, an interview with the schools Head of Rowing, a water assessment on the river Stour and then fitness tests against the other potential sports scholars.
Anyone new to rowing wishing to join the LARC community will need to complete a Learn to Row Course
Any ex-rower, not requiring a L2R course should contact Kirsty i/c New Members via lymingtonarc1881@gmail.com
